One of the MOST common questions I’m asked is “who does your hair? what do you ask for? how do you keep it so white??”
Although I’ve been bleaching my hair since 2015, in 2020 I started doing my own hair. I had just moved to NYC, hadn’t found someone yet, and then the pandemic happened. So, I did some research, bought some products, and just did what my favorite hair colorist at home did. Turns out, I wasn’t half bad at doing my own hair!
BLEACHING
I’ve had a LOT of horrible experiences at a salon. Bleaching is a really difficult thing to do right, and I was often unhappy spending a whole day in a salon chair, in pain, and a couple hundred dollars poorer.
But now, I can do my hair in less than 3 hours, its 100% painless, and MUCH cheaper.
Below is a video on how I do my hair – but don’t use it as a tutorial unless your hair is exactly like mine. If you have darker hair, this process will NOT work for you.
MAINTAINING
The most important step is maintaining your hair. Here are some key measures I take:
1. I never use heat. Except for the occasional event, I don’t ever use a blow dryer, straightener, or curler. I let my hair air dry.
2. I use ItsA10 after every shower and comb my hair to let it towel/air dry.
3. About 1-2/month I wash my hair with diluted white vinegar. This restores the PH balance of my scalp and softens my hair.
4. I use Shimmer Lights shampoo about 1x week (wash your hair as little as possible) to maintain the silver color.
5. I douse my hair in Aussie 3-Minute Miracle. Conditioning is super important because bleaching dries your hair out
6. I always underdevelop. I’d rather my roots be a little brassy than damaged.
7. Before I bleach, I always start with an oily scalp and usually add some primer or coconut oil to help protect my follicles.
8. If its winter and I really need help getting the brassiness out, I’ll use the Overtone toner. It’s not the best but it usually gets the job done.
